Tim Okamura is an artist and painter based in Brooklyn, New York. He specialisies in portraits of Brooklyn natives and has spent the last couple of decades painting mostly women of colour. His aim is to represent those who are rarely painted in traditional figurative art and he realises that sometimes people may not understand why he has chosen his subjects considering his own background.
He is now working on a series of portraits focusing on Afro Americans in the sport of hockey. In this video, Tim shows his new work and talks about his aims and objectives as an artist. We take a look at his Brooklyn art studio, going through canvases and waking a look at his work old and new. Tim works in oil paint and he talks about the joys of being a painter as well as the lows.
